Memberships

The Kernow Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association  exists to promote and facilitate Hang Gliding and Paragliding in Cornwall. There is a monthly meeting on the second Monday of each month at 8 p.m. in the Clinton Social Club. Redruth.

The KHPA developed from the the Kernow Hang Gliding Association (KHGA) in 2002, before that it was the Kernow Sailwing Association formed in 1975. A club founder  is still an active member.

In Cornwall we fly coastal sites at: Sennen, Carbis Bay, Godrevy, Chapel Porth, St Agnes Head,  Perranporth,  High Cliff, Vault Bay, Carne. Inland we fly from Carn Brea and engage in tow launched flights from sites as and when available. K.H.P.A. take this opportunity to express our thanks to site owners for the use of these sites.

Full details can be found in the sites section.

We also acknowledge the co-operation which has always been given from local operators:

Perranporth Airfield at Trevellas.
Lands End Aerodrome.
Moorland Flying Club, Davidstow.
R.A.F. St. Mawgan. and
R.N.A.S. Culdrose.

In the U.K. and abroad K.H.P.A. organises trips to hang gliding sites and competitions. Each year members compete in inter-club and international competitions. In 2002 we had pilots flying competitions at Larangue in Provence, France.

K.H.P.A. has pilots flying in the British National League comprising 40 of the top British pilots.

Visiting pilots from other UK clubs and from abroad are welcome to contact us when we are glad to advise regarding the use of our flying sites.

The Association has recognised coaches to assist less experienced pilots.

Newcomers to our sport are referred for training to one of our most experienced pilots, Graham Phipps who runs Cornwall Hang Gliding and Paragliding Services providing local training and equipment, from a new or used glider down to spare parts, instruments and flying clothing.

We welcome anyone interested in our sport at our monthly meeting or to join us when we are flying our sites. Our active flying membership extends from age 18 to 74 and the club is known as one of the most friendly in the country.

TOWING - LIGHTWEIGHT  LOW COST LEVITATION WITH VERY LITTLE NOISE

The Tow Syndicate

A group of KHPA members with one or two from neighbouring clubs operate a Tow Group equipped with a static winch mounted on a trailer. So far operations have been almost entirely Hang Glider launches with just a few Paraglider launches when qualified pilots and winch operators have been available. Efforts are being made to train Paraglider Tow Coaches, Winch Operators and Pilots. Construction of a pay out winch is under consideration to supplement the static winch and it may be that this style of winch will prove more suitable for Paraglider launching.

When weather conditions are suitable tow launched flying takes place on Saturdays and Sundays at RNAS Culdrose by arrangement with the Culdrose Gliding Club and the Culdrose Recreational Flying Club. Prior arrangements have to be made to access RNAS Culdrose. Members wishing to join the Tow Syndicate can obtain information from the Tow Co-ordinators, Vicki Ferguson and Alan Phipps or any of the Tow Coaches listed below.
