MINUTES OF THE JUNE MEETING OF THE
KERNOW HANG GLIDING & PARAGLIDING ASSOCIATION
AT THE CLINTON SOCIAL CLUB ON 10th JUNE 2002

Pete in the chair welcomed members and a prospective new member Dave Ruse from Mount Hawke, a lapsed HG and PG pilot considering returning to the sport.

APOLOGIES FOR ABSENCE were received from Brian Reynolds
MINUTES OF THE LAST MEETING were read, approved and signed.

MATTERS ARISING.

Competitions. Steve the Hawk gave an account of the 5 day British HG Series Competition in South Wales in which Phippsy came out 15th, Steve 17th and the Two man Kernow Team 11th. Steve reminded members of the further competition this next weekend in North Wales which is combined with the Celtic Cup. All pilots are welcome to join in to fly or support. At the end of this month we have a further round of the British Clubs Challenge based on Abergavenny, South East Wales. Then there is the “Blorenge Bash” 0n 13th-14th July. Pete joined in to say he had been asked if the Association’s dual glider could be available and this was agreed.

Web Site. Alan reported on behalf of www.John saying that the site had been extended to include more information about the Association and the Site guide was now included.

Towing. No towing had happened since the last meeting. Alan said we were all in need of practice ready for the Festival of Free Flight.

Steve’s Seat. Phippsy reported that there had been no response from Carrick to his several reminders. Efforts continue.

Training. Graham told us of activity last Saturday and Sunday at Perranporth. Catherine was caught dog walking on the dunes, was harnessed and launched off the top off the dunes for a successful top to bottom, her first HG flight for 2 years. With a strengthening wind operations were limited to tethered flying.

British Clubs Challenge. Patrick (all stitches and crutches) reported minimal progress. A Kernow PG Team looks possible.

Money. Vicki told us that some recalcitrant subscription payers has asked whether sub’s could be paid by a bank standing order. Problems would arise when subscriptions were altered and a direct debit system is not available to us. It was left to Vicki to proceed as she though best.

Social Events. Phippsy said that clay pigeons were safe for a month or two and he would look for alternative outlets for the competitive or aggressive Kernow spirits ready for the next meeting.

ANY OTHER BUSINESS
Culdrose Air Day. Alan told us that the BHPA Virtual Hang Glider and Van would be available for us to collect at the Blorenge Bash. Pete said he would be able to arrange for it to be driven down to Cornwall. A number of members indicated that they would be available to man the inside and outside stands.

Festival of Free Flight. With many of our most active members away in France support was sought for this event. Daisy is the king pin and Patrick said he would be fit to help with the winch. All available members are asked to support our presence at this event.

The Bulletin. Hannah has appealed for material for The Bulletin.

The Penaluna Trophy. Pete “unveiled” a massive bronze trophy generously made by Paul Howe depicting a flame leaping from the Charbre mountain overlooking Larangue. It was agreed that the trophy should be awarded annually each May, to a member chosen by a panel for “Exceeding normal standards and enthusiasm” . Thanks were expressed to Paul for making this trophy.

Incidents were related including Patrick’s dramatic motor cycle crash, Dave Everett’s crash following a S Devon style landing approach at Vault Bay, Alan’s turbulent top to bottom also at Vault Bay, Harriet landing downwind on a PG at Bossington, Tim’s untidy landing in Wales and Steve’s upright bending efforts also in Wales.

Pete announced his Kernow Ski 2003 based on a trip in January for 16 + members at a cost of £380 plus ski and boot hire plus ski pass. Members should contact Pete as soon as possible as costs will rise if the booking is delayed or minimum numbers are not achieved.

Mark described the SIV course in Turkey.

Steve told of seeing a topless hang glider inverting and then recovering during competition flying in Wales.

Paul described Phippsy’s nervous reactions as bronze at 1136 degrees F was poured into the mould to make the Penaluna Trophy.

Vicki thanked Daisy for his patient help when she launched for the first time on her new Wills Wings Explorer HG at Vault then went on to say the licence fee for Chapel Porth site was due.

Mark (Butler) congratulated Mark (Presland) on achieving his Pilot PG Rating.

Dave Ruse (the new chum) said he was looking for HG and PG coaching or instruction.

Mark Presland asked about the PG XC League and whether this could be extended to include S Devon sites. Pete said the intention of the League was to encourage XC flying from local sites and that our PG pilots should search out suitable sites as happened when HG XC flying started.

Phippsy congratulated Tim on achieving his Pilot HG Rating.

The Fifty Club Draw was made enriching Bill Scott and Steve the Banker Hawk by £5 and £15 respectively.

And that was that for this meeting.
